Fentanyl use is trending on the south island and has now created a very serious risk to companies and their workers. Fentanyl Safety in and around your workplace begins with understanding the drug, the signs of exposure, and your companies policies. The challenge with fentanyl and related drugs are that they can pose a risk not to just the user, but also anyone who accidentally comes into contact. Are your staff trained to be aware of the signs of fentanyl exposure? Do you have and know how to use a naloxone kit?Just who is at risk for exposure and how? Dave Rogers will provide some great examples and tips relating to this trending safety concern.

Safety Culture – How It Can Drive Positive Business Performance

Vincent Russell is the Director of the Strategic Engagements Department at WorkSafeBC. This department provides consultation services to employers and unions to improve safety performance and return to work outcomes.

Now in his 25th year with WorkSafeBC, Vincent has held a number of senior management positions, developing and leading key strategic initiatives.

As Director of the Prevention Risk Analysis Unit, he led the development of this unit designed to provide improved Prevention risk intelligence, detection, analysis, targeting, intervention, and measurement. As Director of Service Strategies, he led the development of WorkSafeBC’s new customer-focused claims strategies. As Director of Industry and Labour Services, he worked closely with multiple industries to increase awareness and action towards building safety in the workplace.

Driving with Purpose

a 90-minute awareness/information presentation which
speaks to the risks inherent to driving. The presentation connects the relationship
between individual due diligence, vicarious liability and bill C-45, and how fleet owners
and managers can adopt methods of the Behavior/Change model to influence the safe
and efficient operation of company vehicles.
The presentation shows the statistical information which supports the fact that operating
a motor vehicle, or piece of equipment, is a person’s greatest risk for serious injury and
death, both in and out of the workplace. Many case studies are reviewed to support the
need for all drivers to assess their own driving ability and to make changes to their
driving behavior to lessen the exposure.
The highly informative session often leads to an enlightening discussion regarding current
and local issues, with specific reference to recent court rulings in company litigation
cases. In addition, typical myths are shattered: “I’m a good driver”; “It won’t happen to
me”; and “The bigger my vehicle, the safer I am”.

Jason Seeley joined Advantage Fleet Services in 2004 and his work expands across
the three western provinces. He is located on Vancouver Island and has over 20 years
of experience in the transportation industry as a professional driver, trainer, safety
assistant, and is an accomplished keynote speaker for a wide variety of events. In 2005,
Jason was certified in Commercial Vehicle Collision Reconstruction and On Scene
Collision Investigator Level II and was a provincially recognized Long Combination
Vehicle Instructor/Examiner, as well as a certified PDIC and Forklift instructor.
His hands-on experience, coupled with a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of
Alberta, and his Board of Directors position as Director of Membership &
Communications for the Canadian Society of Safety Engineers (CSSE)-Pacific Rim
Chapter make him a valuable part of the Advantage Fleet Services Team and an
excellent resource for clients across the west.

Jeffery Lyth

Moving from Safety-I to Safety-II in British Columbia

Health and safety (as we currently know it) has been around for 100 years, and there is currently a global movement that is challenging old beliefs about how safety is best achieved. This is an important and timely consideration, given our new government has vowed to make BC the ‘safest jurisdiction in Canada’. What does that look like in practice?

Since beginning his career in safety over 25 years ago, Jeff Lyth has become recognized as an expert and innovator in workplace safety and leadership. He obtained his Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) and Certified Health and Safety Consultant (CHSC) designations and spent seven successful years as Director of Corporate Health and Safety for a large construction company in the Pacific Northwest. During the early part of his career, he also enjoyed working in emergency response and was a Paramedic, Lifeguard, and Ski Patroller in his spare time.Throughout his career, Jeff has been involved in industry-leading innovation, such as the first Canadian use of computerized tower-crane anti-collision systems, the province-wide use of the ‘Safety Climate Tool’ survey from the Health and Safety Laboratory in the U.K., and the development of the BCCSA Silica Tool among other things. Jeff has represented the Canadian Construction Association (CCA) on the Current Issues Committee for Health Canada’s intergovernmental Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System transition to the Globally Harmonized System (GHS), and was also accepted by the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development as a Canadian Construction Occupational Health and Safety Specialist to the Canada/China Migrant Labour Occupational Health and Safety project and participated in two missions to central China.Jeff joined the provincial safety association as Senior Safety Advisor to British Columbia’s construction sector in 2012, a move which allowed him to focus on integrating and applying the ideas and philosophies of the global ‘safety differently’ movement. He has ‘retired’ his CRSP and CHSC designations, and his current work is entirely in the leadership development/safety-II space, assisting a variety of organizations and safety departments to move beyond a conventional approach and to break through the performance plateaus associated with those views and methods.

His focus is on ‘productive safety’ and building capacity for operational resilience.

Eye Health & Safety – Often “Overlooked” 

Did you know that the health of your eyes can affect your overall work and performance at work? Whether you’re looking at a computer screen all day or working on a job site, workers and companies need to consider Comprehensive eye health evaluations. These are often overlooked, but a  medical necessity for everyone in the  workforce. They are absolutely essential. Vision problems and injuries can lead to discomfort and reduced productivity at best, and time off work and compensation claims at worst. Dr. Stephen Taylor and his colleague Dr Peddle from the Mayfair Optometric Clinic in Victoria, will discuss some of the many eye-related issues that can affect today’s worker on the job, such as digital eyestrain for office workers, caused by blue light exposure, sun protection, ocular migraines that can cause intense pain and result in lost work time, and eye trauma from impact or foreign objects.  Many eye conditions and injuries are preventable or manageable with safe work practices in the office or on the job site that avert eye injuries, alleviate short-term eyestrain and ward off long-term damage. Eye protection and optimal performance on the job can often involve wearing safety-style or office-style glasses that fit properly and whose lenses are designed precisely for the task for which they will be used, whether or not a corrective prescription is required.

Moving Well, Preventing Workplace Injuries and Staying Well

Workplace injuries can have a huge effect of someones ability to work and quality of life. Lower back pain is the number one cause of disability worldwide. In this presentation learn the common ways back injuries occur in the workplace. We’ll also cover preventative measures such as proper mechanics when lifting, bending and moving. Lastly, learn ways to keep the body limber, strong and injury-free as well as what to do when you get injured to get you back on the job safely.

Dr. Cale Copeland BSc.N, D.C. has been a practicing chiropractor since 2006 and is owner of Victoria Family Chiropractic. He’s a graduate of Palmer College of Chiropractic West as class Valedictorian, Magna Cum Laude and was also a member of the school’s prestigious sports council.  He served as the official Chiropractor for the Victoria Grizzlies junior hockey team from 2007 to 2017 and currently works with the UVIC Vikes hockey club as team chiropractor.  He volunteers his services to the homeless at Our Place every month and has been doing so since 2010.  Dr. Copeland is a frequent speaker on the topics of health, performance and prevention. He is also the host of ‘Back to Health’ a bi-monthy podcast where he interviews established professionals from all disciplines on health and wellbeing. He is married and has two children and his interests include family, health, fitness, hockey and learning.

Ergonomics across the generations: from millennials to aging workers

Age is no barrier to what’s possible in today’s workplaces. With the removal of mandatory retirement, workers are working longer than ever before. Meanwhile, by 2025, millennials are expected to make up 75 percent of the Canadian workforce. Each generation brings its own unique perspective; each, its own challenges. Learn practical and age-appropriate ways ergonomics can be used to prevent workers from getting injured — while maximizing their potential — no matter where they fall on the aging worker spectrum.

Gina first became interested in ergonomics while working in a physiotherapist office. Time and time again, she saw workers who were recovering from work-related musculoskeletal injuries (MSIs) return to their jobs and encounter the same conditions that caused their injury in the first place. Frustrated with seeing these workers reinjure themselves, Gina decided to focus on prevention and specialize in ergonomics at Simon Fraser University.  She learned to take a systems approach and apply principles at the worksite to improve the fit between workers and their tasks and equipment, as well as their organizational and physical work environment. She also learned that ergonomics not only prevents injury and costs, it also benefits workplaces by improving quality, productivity, and morale.

Gina has been an ergonomist for more than twenty years, working as an in-house ergonomist at the University of British Columbia before joining the Risk Analysis Unit at WorkSafeBC ten years ago. A Canadian Certified Professional Ergonomist and Certified Health and Safety Consultant, she has shared her knowledge at conferences across North America, including the National Ergonomics Conference in Las Vegas, USA and the Canadian Society of Safety Engineers Professional Development Conference.

Jennifer Colman

Understanding Human Error

Jenny earned her undergraduate degree (BSc) in Ergonomics / Human Factors (HFE) at Loughborough University, UK where she specialized in human error, forensic and system ergonomics. This background led to an 11 year opportunity in WorkSafeBC’s fatal and serious injury investigation division to analyze why an event occurred for the benefit of organizational and industry-wide learning. During that time, she earned her Masters (MSc) in Human Factors and System Safety at Lund University, Sweden. Her social science thesis focused on how workers manage high risk, dynamic and unforgiving environments to deliver on production targets. Jenny is currently working in the WorkSafeBC Risk Analysis Unit and assisting industries in learning more about their potentially catastrophic risks.

Jenny is a Canadian Registered Safety Profession (CRSP). She also teaches Safety Management Systems at Simon Fraser University (SFU) and over the last decade she has provided many industry-focused training sessions on Incident Investigations. Her experience in incident investigations led to an invitation to contribute to the development of a new Canadian Standards Association (CSA) standard – Z1005 for Incident Investigation. She is also the past president (2016) of the BC/YK Association of Canadian Ergonomists (ACE) to promote the professional value of human factors.

Brent, co-owner, and president of Paul Brent Enterprises Ltd, Recently was given a title of “EDU-TAINER”.  A certified corporate team building coach, a motivation, and communication workshop facilitator and a general consultant, professional entertainer, speaker, and presenter.  Has a 20-year career as a safety training provider and provides sessional safety instructor 20-year and master instructor programs.   A construction trades background as a Brick layer/refractory installer, general construction foreman and with multiple skills as a laborer.  Paul has extensive worksite experience from many occupations in many locations, learning and has gained priceless knowledge. Paul was raised on a family operated dairy/harvesting farm in Alberta, and his family was highly active in local and surrounding communities at many levels.  They have a proud place in the settling history of Alberta, and a legacy of helping people.

Geoff Moffett

MENTAL HEALTH IN THE WORKPLACE

Geoff Moffett is a Facilitator for the Canadian Mental Health Association, BC Division-Victoria Office. He has held various positions working with marginalized people, including people experiencing traumatic brain injuries, homelessness, criminal involvement, addiction and mental illness.

Geoff graduated from the University of Winnipeg with a Bachelor of Arts. He worked in the Manitoba government as a Correctional Officer, Program Facilitator and Probation Officer before moving out west. In these roles, he has worked with clients helping manage the change process and realizing their goals.

Geoff is an award winning basketball coach, having coached for over 20 years. He has coached at the high school and community level and currently runs a basketball program in Victoria.

Drive Smart

Colleen Woodger, ICBC Community & Road Safety Coordinator, works in the south Vancouver Island area. With over 27 years in the organization, she has worked in claims, licensing and road safety. Providing educational resources and liaising with community stakeholders are the foundation of Colleen’s expertise in this field. Her dynamic presentation covers many topics such as the Drive Smart campaign, Distractions, Impaired Driving and Pedestrian safety, to name a few. There is a prevalent theme of awareness and accountability which makes the presentation relevant to not only the workplace but also to personal & family situations. The Drive Smart campaign, in particular, addresses the fact that most drivers say that driving in the province has gotten worse in the last five years – pointing at bad driving behaviors as one of the top contributors to B.C.’s road problems. To help combat this growing issue, ICBC has launched a new road safety campaign to encourage all drivers to reflect on their driving habits. The campaign will focus on many critical components to being a safe driver: our knowledge of the rules of the road, how we behave behind the wheel, and our attitude toward our responsibility as a driver. Also, resources for a variety of road safety issues will be covered & made available as well as ample opportunity to discuss topics and ask questions. Safety on our roads continues to be a concern for employers, families & communities alike and this presentation will provide a valuable overview of the importance of education and working together towards safer travel for all.

Hearing Loss: What Does it Sound Like?

Safety Specialist/Confined Space Specialist, Manufacturing Safety Alliance of BC

In 1997, Sheldon had to give up his career as a BC Correctional Officer due gradual hearing loss in both ears – a result of a training exercise while in the Canadian Armed Forces. Through his personal experiences, Sheldon understands the difficulties and challenges that come with hearing impairment.

In this 90-minute awareness session, Sheldon will be giving a personal, in-depth perspective of living with hearing loss and its effect on both his personal and professional life. He will explore  topics such as:

  • How hearing loss can affect co-workers, family and loved ones
  • Tips on how to communicate with the hearing impaired
  • How the hearing impaired use body language to help further communication
  • Workplace strategies to accommodate for hearing health and hearing impaired employees
  • Ways to prevent hearing loss in the workplace and at home
  • Hearing hazard mitigation

Today as the Confined Space Specialist at the Manufacturing Safety Alliance of BC, Sheldon works with an array of employers across BC, from fish farms and machine shops to wineries and breweries. Sheldon develops customized solutions for his clients, including safety management systems; hazard assessments; confined space entry and rescue plans; resources for confined spaces and equipment; prevention through design; and training.

His unique and impactful perspective will challenge your perceptions of the hearing impaired and, hopefully, cause a shift in your interactions and overall mindset.

Joint Health & Safety Committee Effectiveness

After losing the vision in his left eye from a workplace accident, Daniel York knew he wanted to prevent similar injuries from happening to others. Today, as the OSSE (COR) Technical Advisor at the Manufacturing Safety Alliance of BC, his goal is to make sure employees are protected at work.

Daniel’s diverse background of over 20 years in the workforce includes manufacturing, music/entertainment, food services, and warehousing. Having come up through the ranks, he has a broad range of experience in safety management, provincial law and municipal bylaw investigations, emergency response, customer service, and conflict resolution.
One of the best tools for creating a safe workplace, and effective safety culture, is the company Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC). The JHSC serves as the communication bridge between management, supervisors, and workers. An effective JHSC program consists of members who are knowledgeable of the work processes and are empowered to provide advice and recommendations to improve the safety management system. Supporting the education, training, and involvement of the JHSC members is crucial to the on-going success of the safety program.

In this 90-minute awareness session, Daniel will be examining the effectiveness of the JHSC in the workplace. This workshop will discuss strategies for effective communication with management and front-line workers, and tips for maintaining a safety presence in the workplace through involvement with inspections, incident investigations, and hazard identification processes.

The Value of a CSO on a Jobsite

Tony has had an upward trajectory throughout his Safety career, beginning as a general laborer and working his way up the corporate ladder to key supervisory roles such as Confined Space Entry & Monitor Team Lead, Safety Manager and a Health and Safety Professional.

Tony has worked as an EH&S Coordinator and Shutdown Manager for Domcor, and a shutdown Construction Safety Officer for API (formerly Alstom GE), as well as for Sky-Hi Scaffolding.  He has extensive firsthand experience in hazard assessment, health & safety, various construction types & techniques, claims management, developing and maintaining COR Safety Management Systems, and environmental health and safety consulting.

Tony is a graduate of the University of Victoria, and has over 7 years’ experience as a teacher, 8 years as a professional rugby player, 15 years as a high-level coach and 5 years’ experience working as a health and safety professional.  Some of the many courses that he successfully completed include, Auditor training, Behavioral Based Safety Management Systems, Safety Training Systems, Construction Safety Coordinator, Confined Space Entry and Rescue, Fall Protection, WHMIS and several others.

Tony remembers what it’s like to be at the end of a shovel and won’t hesitate, even today, to pick up a spade and dig-in with the troops. He is a flexible team player willing to provide support and technical assistance to others in order to achieve your company goals.  Managing his time efficiently and ensuring that his technical skills are up-to-date are a top priority.
